Getting to Know: Megan Lennon, Marketing Executive

Desk of Marketing Executive with some information on job role
    Time with the company:

    A: 2 Years.

What time did you get up this morning?

    05:15am.

What attracted you to Goudsmit UK?

The fact it was B2B and I was used to seeing marketing from a B2C perspective. Likewise, the nature of the business was new to me, so I knew I would be able to learn new things about marketing within a different industry. I enjoy a challenge!

Describe your job in 5 words

    Fun, challenging, creative, unpredictable, rewarding.

    What does your job entail?

All things marketing! From organising exhibitions, writing blogs, maintaining and updating the website, analytics, forecasting trends and not to forget SEO.

What does a typical day involve for you?

For me, no two days are the same. There’s always a new task each day that needs done. I tend to plan ahead and make a list of ‘To Do’s’ at the beginning of each week, although this list does tend to get longer as the week goes on! However, it’s usually something along the lines of writing a blog, updating the website, research, acquiring backlinks, booking events, working with external agencies around branding and a lot of SEO work.

How did you get into this line of work?

I grew up in a family business, so I was pushed out to work from an early age doing everything and anything possible. I always took a shine to marketing though, but it was really during my A-levels I decided that I was going to pursue a career in marketing. It was something I both enjoyed and loved.

What’s the best part of your job at Goudsmit UK?

The level of trust among staff is incredibly important at Goudsmit UK, and that plays such a large part of the incredible work ethic here. For me personally, I’ve been provided with ownership over roles and I am constantly being thrown into things that I’ve never done before with the guidance and direction needed to learn. This is definitely the best part of my job, I’ve been able to expand my knowledge and build my confidence since joining the company.

What personal qualities are required to do your job?

Time management and organisation are probably the most important qualities, purely because there’s quite a lot of different aspects that need done daily. Balancing this along with any new workload is important to make sure everything gets done.

It’s also important to be a people person. You learn quite quickly that you rely on your team, particularly for their knowledge and to bounce ideas off. It also comes in handy when building up relationships with other people in the industry, especially media contacts.

What’s the biggest challenges you face in your job?

There’s a lot involved in marketing, so finding where to start is usually my biggest challenge daily. Also, being the only person in the marketing department can be challenging at times, some things are new to me so having to learn and quickly develop a new skill can be quite time-consuming and difficult.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is the creative freedom and ownership of projects. The work is flexible enough that I can apply my own style and interests. Having done or been involved in such large tasks has had a huge impact on my confidence and overall work pace and quality. Gaining this experience has definitely reduced the intensity of final year and provided me with insights and preparation for the real world after University.

The office culture and amicable co-workers at Goudsmit UK is a huge perk. The relaxed atmosphere created by such a friendly and intelligent team makes work more than just a job and more like an enjoyable hobby. It motivates me to strive for success not just for myself but the team and company.

What’s the best piece of advice you could give to a new person joining your team?

I would advise anyone joining the team to ask as many questions as you need to wrap your head around a problem/ gain an understanding. In my experience if there’s anything you’re unsure about there’s always someone willing to give you a very good answer which really helps you progress in your learning.

Also be eager to consume content, whether it’s from your team, talks or blogs. If you do so, you’ll stay up to date and be able to apply this information to your work and produce better results.

What do you do in your spare time?

Coffee, gym, more coffee and also the odd trip away.

Any fun / interesting facts about you?

I am probably the most accident-prone person you’ll ever meet. Oh and today’s my 21st Birthday!

What time will you get home this evening?

    Usually around 6-6:15pm.
