Magnets for the Oil and Gas Industry

The oil and gas industry presents some of the most challenging environments and demanding applications for magnets and magnetic assemblies.

Goudsmit UK specialises in developing magnets that can withstand extreme environments for the oil and gas industry. When constructing magnets for this industry it is recommended using rare earth magnets, such as Neodymium and Samarium Cobalt magnets. This is due to their highly desirable properties such as their high coercive force and high-temperature stability. While Samarium Cobalt magnets have corrosion resistant properties, Neodymium magnets do not. Therefore, they are plated. Moreover, rare earth magnets are used to remove scales that are created by aging oil equipment, pipes, and unwanted ferrous materials.

    Applications

There are numerous applications in which our magnets and magnetic assemblies are used for in the oil & gas industry, to include:

    • Sensors
    • Drives
    • Pump and valve technologies
    • Couplings
    • Above-ground MFL inspection technologies
    • Separation & filtration
    • Lifting magnets
    • NMR exploration tools

    Assembly and design considerations

When designing these magnets and magnetic assemblies, there are several factors that must be taken into consideration. Firstly, an analysis of the environmental condition must be conducted, then based on whether the magnet will be on or offshore or used in a shallow well or geothermal depths, the material used to construct the magnet will vary. Lastly, the temperature rating and coating of the magnetic material must be reviewed.

The Goudsmit UK team has extensive training, certifications, and experience designing and also building complex precision components and magnetic assemblies. In addition, every product is optimised for quality, performance, and cost. Years of experience with prototypes and re-manufacturing results in significant operational savings for all our customers.
