Calculating Magnetic Force for Block, Ring and Disc Magnets

    Calculating magnetic force

    What is the magnetic force?

The magnetic force is a consequence of the electromagnetic force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature, and is caused by the motion of charges. Two objects containing charge with the same direction of motion have a magnetic attraction force between them. Similarly, objects with charge moving in opposite directions have a repulsive force between them.

Calculating the accurate magnetic force between magnet and magnet or between magnet and steel plate requires professionalism, extensive experience, and also advanced simulation software. However, we’ve created a simplistic way for you to calculate an estimation of magnetic force. Before using the calculator, please see below considerations:

    • Magnetisation in direction of height H
    • The equations are based on fits on both FEM and otherwise obtained force data, and take uncertainties on both these data into account
    • The largest uncertainty is in the measured data fits. Measured data here means pull/holding force data as found within published online literature
    • The force is an estimate / approximation. No liability for deviations with measured forces

The force calculator can be used for both the computation of the holding/pull force between two identical magnets, and for the computation of the holding/pull force between a magnet and a magnetically non-saturated (hence, sufficiently thick) steel plate. Also, we have only considered the situation of zero distance between magnet and magnet or, equivalently, between magnet and steel plate. Non-zero air gaps are not considered. Note that for zero distance, the force between a magnet and a steel plate is the same as the force between two identical magnets (NOT for non-zero distance, in which case the force between a magnet and a steel plate is smaller than the force between two identical magnets)”.
