Magnetic detachers and security tags make up two critical part of an EAS system. The tag acts as a small ‘signal transmitter’ which is placed on the items you wish to protect. Should the item then come within a specific range of the EAS antennas, the tag will signal for an alarm to be sounded.
Security Tags
Commonly used to protect items like clothing, accessories and alcohol, security tags have a hard, external casing with a transmitter housed inside. This transmitter is in constant communication with the antenna guarding the entrance to the store.
There are two common types of locking mechanisms used within security tags:
- Mechanical locks
- Magnetic locks
In the case of magnetic locks there are different strengths available, ranging from standard to SuperLock, HyperLock and Multipolar. The higher the magnetic strength, the more difficult the tag is to remove without the detacher.
Security tag removal
Security tags require removal when a product has been purchased. This process is relatively simple and requires a detacher device which is mounted or installed in the counter at the Point of Sale. Either a mechanical device or a high-powered magnet, the detacher releases the security tag’s locking mechanism and allows the tag to be removed.
The difference between mechanical and magnetic detachers
The biggest difference between mechanical and magnetic tags are their lock mechanisms, whether they unlock with the use of mechanic force or magnetic power. A mechanic lock can be unlocked with the help of force. While a magnetic lock is unlocked with the help of magnetic power, therefore requiring the detacher to have strong magnetic quality.

Often, companies opt for a tag that contains the benefits of both mechanical and magnetic detachers. This type of tag offers a combined locking mechanism that uses both mechanic and magnetic technique. The combination of the two makes it almost impossible for someone without an authorised detacher to remove the tags. Therefore, making it one of the safest tags in the world.
